Study visit: A Sense of Growth & Beyond Borders
Join OCA tutor Priscilla Jones in Manchester for a double textiles study visit on the 27 May. We will visit A Sense of Growth & Beyond Borders at the Whitworth.
Best-known for her textiles, Lucienne Day is recognised as a virtuoso pattern designer and colourist. Lucienne Day was an enthusiastic gardener and plant forms inspired many of her textile designs. As part of the nationwide Lucienne Day centenary celebrations, this exhibition opens in spring 2017.
The show is part of the gallery’s GROW project that promotes the benefits of engaging in horticultural activities to improve mental wellbeing. Groups and individuals within the local community who are experiencing social isolation or dealing with issues around mental health will work with Paula Day from the Robin and Lucienne Day Foundation to select works to display from the Whitworth’s extensive archive of Lucienne Day designs.
Beyond Borders, explores South Asian textiles bringing together four artists working on issues around post-colonial identity, ruptured spaces, authenticity, displacement and belonging. These artists are based in Pakistan, India, Bangladesh and England, having developed artworks around these concerns, experimenting with a range of media and such as textiles, fibres, embroidery, film, photography and performance.
The exhibition highlights the changing landscape of the subcontinent in the twenty first century, post independence and partition.
Beyond Borders is exhibited across the Whitworth’s main textile gallery. Each artist’s new work is debuted alongside textiles and/or objects from the Whitworth’s textile collection. Pattern books and vibrant textiles are selected to responded and resonate with themes captured in the artist’s own creations.
