Study visit review: America After the Fall

The Study Day gave students a chance to meet fellow art students on differing courses that ranged from drawing, painting, illustration and photography and it was a valuable opportunity to enjoy a day out with like-minded enthusiasts.

I have recently discovered South African textile artist Willemien de Villiers. Her stitched work caught my attention because of the stories that she tries to tell through the materials she uses and the techniques to talk about the process of decay and disintegration, as well as the inevitable new growth and integration that follows.

Recently I was contemplating the distinction between origin and originality. I was reading Re-writing the Self by Mark Freeman at the time I was reviewing contemporary artist research for Major Project and how they influenced my own work. I was horrified. What I took to be my own work, the product of commitment to a process with no predetermined fixed point or predicted outcome, resulted in pieces that were strikingly similar to those out there in the world.

I am very pleased to announce that the new drawing HE4 course, Exploring Drawing Media, is now available for students at level one . The course is part of a fantastic drawing degree pathway being developed by programme leader Doug Burton and his team. Having written for HE5 and 6 (levels two and three) I was so pleased to be able to write this course for the Open College of the Arts.

Whatever our specialisms, as writers, visual artists and musicians, we should all be indebted to John Berger for his strong and thought-provoking ideas. I particularly like the way he called himself a listener and a storyteller.
