I’m Still Here: 2018 Koestler Awards exhibition
Join OCA tutor Jayne Taylor on Sunday 21 October for a thought-provoking visit to the annual Koestler Trust exhibition at London’s Royal Festival Hall.
The Koestler Trust is the UK’s best-known prison arts charity, facilitating and championing creativity in prisons and other secure institutions. Each year, the Trust promotes a fresh perspective on the theme, format & presentation of its major London exhibition by inviting a different group – or guest artist – to curate works submitted by those in the UK criminal justice system. Past curators have included victims of crime, serving female prisoners and graduates of the Koestler Trust’s own mentoring programmes, as well as artists Antony Gormley, Sarah Lucas and Grayson Perry, poet Benjamin Zephaniah and rapper Speech Debelle.
This year’s exhibition, ‘I’m Still Here’ is curated by families of detainees. Each family has selected from among the thousands of pieces submitted for the 2018 Koestler Awards artworks that illustrate their experiences of having a loved one who is detained. Their exhibition will include the full range of art, writing and music being created by prisoners, secure patients and detainees, as well as people on community sentences and on probation, across the UK.
Students from all levels and all disciplines are welcome. Research materials will be provided with the joining instructions ahead of the trip; these will also be available to any students unable to attend. Please let us know if you would like to receive them. Email firstname.lastname@example.org.
If you are unable to join us on 21 October but would like to be included in the post-visit group Hangout discussion, email email@example.com to register your interest.
