Many students at first can be a bit tentative about using mixed media. Lack of confidence, a fear of the unknown perhaps or else they are just not sure how it will all turn out. Susan Askew, a student on the Drawing 1 course, has no such doubts and instead has dived straight in, fearlessly combining collage with various drawing and painting media.

A day in the sun at Hay…it’s one of the selling points of the Hay Festival – photos on the website are focused on people under sun umbrellas reading their latest purchase and drinking cool lager. This is a risky ploy for a Welsh summer event, but it paid off for the OCA posse that arrived at the festival grounds on bank holiday Saturday. We’d come for the culture, of course we had. We’d come for the literature, naturally, for the heightened conversation we’d enjoy with each other after sharing events. But the fact the sun was out certainly helped.

On Saturday 2 July OCA tutor Sandra Flower will once again be hosting a study visit to the New Designers Exhibition at the Business Design Centre in London. New Designers is an annual event that showcases the work of the UK’s emerging designers. It is a huge design fair exhibiting the work of over 1500 students.

I went to the kind of school where you could give up history early on to concentrate on your sewing. My conceptualisation of history is roughly ‘Vikings, the Bayeux Tapestry, Henry VIII and WW2’. The near complete absence of women in the world, not to mention the absence of most of the world according to the history I was taught left me distrustful of it at an early age.

Join OCA tutor Jim Cowan on the 2 July at the Dulwich Picture Gallery. We will view the work of Winifred Knights. This is the first major retrospective of the award-winning Slade School artist, this exhibition will reunite all her completed paintings for the first time since their creation, including the apocalyptic masterpiece The Deluge, 1920, which attracted immense critical acclaim.
