Student work: Julie Hooker

I have the pleasure of sharing the Reflective Evaluation video made by BA Textiles student Julie Hooker.

Julie recently submitted for assessment her Textiles 2: Contemporary Practice work, which is the final Level 2 course unit before Level 3. As one of the first Textiles students to submit work digitally for assessment Julie made several videos as a way of describing and illustrating the tactile and physical qualities of her work. You can find all her videos at her YouTube channel; they are well worth a look (link below).

However, I want to bring to your attention Julie’s Reflective Evaluation video. This aspect of the assessment submission is new to many OCA pathways and can be done as written text, a presentation or video. Students are asked to summarise their learning over the course unit as a way of bringing to the attention of the assessor the important aspects of their learning. The aim is to bring the student voice to the centre of assessment by allowing you the opportunity to speak about the things that have been of greatest value to you. Julie does this well by talking us through the journey she and her textile took and the results she arrived at. She illustrates this with examples of her work and the stories behind them.

  • Excellent honest reflective evaluation Julie. Very clear and articulate. Really useful to have viewed this – thankyou!

  • A brilliant reflective evaluation of your work, so much more informative and connective to your work than a page of written A4. This has shown just how much more can be expressed in a video, Thank you for sharing I think it is a valuable learning example to all of us.

  • Thanks for sharing your evaluation Julie, not only is it great to hear about your work, but also to hear directly from you.

  • You prove how affective video can be as a form of communicating what you have learnt.
This was a really enjoyable watch. Good luck with your future studies. I love the weaving and your studio.

  • I’m doing the foundation textiles course and enjoying it but it is a little daunting and I am in awe of a lot I see from the BA route. This video is really inspiring to me, to hear you say how much you’ve gained from trying new things and also the difficulties you’ve had and overcome with regards to your approach. Thanks so much for sharing. Good luck with your future work.

  • This is such a natural and clear reflection and has inspired me to try to do something similar for my first ever assessment. Your work looks wonderful as well
