Lucy Courtney
OCA tutor and assessor Les Monaghan looks at the work of BA Hons Photography student Lucy Courtney.
Les singles out a set of images from assignment 1 of Context and Narrative and Lucy’s ability to communicate something really direct. She lets us into her life where she is a wife and carer to her husband with Alzheimers. She uses her camera as a vehicle for human feeling, the images are immediately apparent and powerful. The frame is filled with details, the studium* as you move around wanting to look further.

It is really nice to discover Lucy’s work and to look at how – while documenting her husband illness – she also negotiates with this project her role both as photographer and subject deeply involved in what she observes through the lens.
The way Lucy holds the camera at times, extending her arm to get a different perspective (therefore offering her audience a rare perspective too) is such wise strategy, I personally felt very close to the subject and it created a proximity with the persons that is not always easy to elicit photographically. Thanks for sharing!
