Study Visit: Art_Textiles
Join Rebecca Fairley on Friday 20 November for a study visit to the Whitworth Gallery, Manchester, to see their latest textile exhibition Art_Textiles.
This major exhibition explores the status of textiles as an art medium and how since the 1960’s a growing body of contemporary art demonstrates a new engagement with the discipline. The show looks at artists who use textiles to express ideas about the social, political and artistic.
This exhibition will appeal to both Textile and Creative Arts students. It includes work from Magdalena Abakanowicz, Tracy Emin, Grayson Perry, Ghada Amer and Kimsooja.
Magdalena Abakanowicz creates organic sculptural forms in textile materials that often relate to the human body. Tracy Emin famously uses textiles to investigate her life in the creation of works like Everyone I Have Everyone Slept With 1963 – 1995. Grayson Perry in recent years has created large-scale tapestries combining digital technology with traditional techniques. Ghada Amer’s highly embroidered work deals with issues of gender and sexuality. The work of Kimsooja often examines everyday actions such as sewing or doing laundry, exploring the experiences of repetitive actions.
Textiles have historically been marginalised by the art world, being seen as a craft practiced by women. This exhibition promises to reveal that textiles art is finally becoming mainstream with a renewed interest in techniques, materials and the handmade.

I would loved to have joined in this study visit, but living in Spain, its not easy to arrange or afford the time, flights and accommodation to do so. I would love to hear from anyone who went to the study visit and hear their feedback or share any imagery.
Hi Diane I will be doing a write up along with some imagery that will be published here on the oca blog after the visit.
