Happy Doodle Day!
Hi my name is Joanne and I have OCD, that is to say I am an Obsessive Compulsive Doodler. Today, the 7 March is National Doodle Day and I decided to pay homage to the humble doodle.
Doodling has been defined as ‘to scribble or draw aimlessly, to play or improvise idly’. The word ‘play’ is interesting as Picasso once said ‘Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up.’
Check out Olivia’s post as she explores the power of doodling in response to a recent study visit to see the work of Louise Bourgeois.
Is doodling uncontrived, unconscious mark making, is it possible that it is one of the most ‘genuine’ forms of art open to interpretation and unearthing the inner workings of an individual’s mind or is it in fact just some scribbles on a page. “One of the strangest things about doodling is that no-one tells us what we should be doing yet many of us end up doodling similar things.”
Below are some of our office doodles, we’ve Jane’s colourful concoctions, Leanne’s Zentangle –esque workings and my blue period…
Please share links to your doodles below!
These doodles are great! I don’t agree with the quote that says that many of us end up doodling the same kind of things. I think they are infinitely varied.
They’re Great! During buttonpressing phone calls, boring meetings. ink or paint blobs turn into all sorts of things. I was always in trouble for doodling in class, so add me to the ocd group!
When I was at university I doodled like crazy so accumulated sheafs of doodles which I cut up to form a collage and submitted to the university art exhibition, which had tutors crowded round to see if their lectures had been doodled. I’ve been doodling madly ever since.
