I am a constructed textile designer based in Yorkshire. I create textiles for a broad range of applications; fashion, interiors, illustration and most recently I have begun to explore the possibilities of old textile techniques such as basket weaving, braiding, knotting and cording within a jewellery context. I am really interested in creating tactile and intricate forms and exploring pattern on pattern through colour and material manipulations- often using repetition and geometric forms within my designs.
After completing my BA in Multi Media Textile Design from Loughborough University I created bodies of work through collaborative practice and for Milan Fashion week- focussing on sustainable textiles and their possibilities. I quickly started working as a freelance designer, developing and creating designs for clients such as Prada, Calvin Klein Home, Armani, H&M, Debenhams, AX and Alaia. I still work freelance and the wide ranging briefs allow me to explore print, knit and embroidery within my designs.
After spending two years developing my aesthetic I was really keen to be able to place my fabrics into a context so I completed an MDes in Textiles As Fashion at Glasgow School of Art. Here I developed my skills in how to create a cohesive collection and created garments exploring the combinations of print, macramé and knit. I also continued to develop my explorations into surface pattern and constructed textile forms through modules in jewellery design. The course really shaped how I work now as a designer in terms of my innovative approach to design and the value of ongoing personal reflection, and has influenced my teaching style.
After completing a PGCE I worked as a Textiles, Fashion and Costume pathway leader on a Foundation course for four years and also taught at degree and extended diploma level. I now continue to work freelance, develop my jewellery collection and teach various textile based workshops around Yorkshire to both children and adults.
As a tutor I really enjoy the process of encouraging my students to really question their practice and often undo existing approaches to what they view textiles to be. I believe in really testing boundaries and limitations of materials and possible outcomes and to embrace experimentation, self-reflection and contextual awareness.
