Matthew Winterlich

I am currently programme leader in Lens Based Media at Hull School of Art and Design teaching on Foundation Degree and BA (Hons) courses.

I studied photography at Leeds College of Technology and I have an MA in Critical and Theoretical Studies in Art and Design from Lincoln University.

In the early part of my career I developed along with other artists an art based co-operative in Leeds, which eventually become a recognized training provider. Working with the local community and industry we were successful in providing job and educational opportunities for young people.

I maintain my own practice within the area of gallery orientated work, publication, site installation and commissions. I have also worked within the commercial sector as a photographer and video maker.

I have exhibited my work in many venues including the National Portrait Gallery, London, The Gallery of Photography, Dublin, Feren’s Art Gallery, Hull, Wakefield Art Gallery, The Photographers Gallery and Dean Clough Gallery, Halifax. My work is in gallery and private collections.

I have also developed an exhibited work through site-specific installations. This work has been multi-media in content including the use of photography, video, sound, sculptural design and performance. The sites have been diverse and challenging to work in. They include warehouses, offices, tents, galleries and churches. The latter consisted of developing a dedication altar the results of which achieved a fleeting notoriety in the national press.

I am interested in the different facets of photography and the crossovers of different genres into an individual practice. I have a particular interest in portraiture, documentary and fine art practice. I welcome the convergence of new technologies into the medium. I believe that we are entering a new age of photographic practice where boundaries are blurred between practitioners and where the weight of theory cannot be ignored in our practice.

My other interests include in no particular order, literature, walking, cycling, cinema, theatre, performance, playing a number of musical instruments and singing at a tolerable level.
