Laura Scott

I am an image-maker and illustrator based in London.

My background is in illustration and graphic design, as both a teacher and professional practitioner. After completing my BA (Hons) in Graphic Design/Illustration at Bath Spa University I went on to gain a Postgraduate Certificate in Education and have lectured on Graphic Design and Illustration for several years. In 2012 I graduated with an MA in Visual Communication from the Royal College of Art. I find teaching a very rewarding experience and I enjoy the two-way flow of ideas that enriches both my own work and my teaching.

There are two main strands to my practice; colourful images that utilise found materials, mixed media and collage and then contrasting with this I make starker, more pared down drawings. I have also become interested in the idea of the image as an object. By turning two-dimensional images into three dimensions, I interpret prose and narrative creating objects that commemorate and reverberate.

Past commissions include a set of illustrations to accompany a collection of short stories entitled Talking to Strangers (Commissioned by the Belvedere Writer’s Club and published by Intellect and Decode Publishing). I have also had work included in Mark Wigan’s book Text and Image (published by AVA). I was selected for inclusion in the AOI Annual Images on three occasions and also took part in two of the accompanying exhibitions in London.

I believe that the OCA offers an excellent and specialist art and design education, one that is both flexible and affordable. As a working mother myself I can fully appreciate the difficulties of balancing responsibilities and personal interests. The OCA provides an opportunity to gain a high quality arts education at a pace that suits the individual.
