I am a Sheffield-based musicologist who combines formal positions in academia and the arts with freelance writing and speaking.
I joined the OCA as tutor in September 2022. Alongside this role, I am Lecturer in Music (Academic Education Pathway) at King’s College London and Teaching Fellow in Music at the University of Nottingham. Previously, I have held Teaching Fellow positions at the University of Sheffield and Liverpool Hope University, and for several years was a Research Assistant at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire. I completed my BMus and PhD at the University of Sheffield.
As a researcher I specialise in twentieth-century music. I have interests in American music and music for the stage (ballet, opera, and musical theatre), with the nature of artistic collaboration and work of Leonard Bernstein a focus to date. I am author of Bernstein and Robbins: The Early Ballets (Eastman Studies in Music, University of Rochester Press, 2021) and in recent years have contributed chapters and articles to The Cambridge Stravinsky Encyclopedia (2021) and The Cambridge History of Music Criticism (2019). Future projects centre around American opera and ballet.
A common thread across my work is a commitment to engaging audiences and sharing knowledge. I have written programme notes and articles for organisations including the BBC Proms and have been a guest expert on BBC Radio 3. Since 2019 I have been the European Opera Centre’s Curator, a role which has seen me lead the Centre’ adult opera education programme and train animateurs for the Centre’s learning programme.
