Textiles Study Visit

Textiles study visit 26th April

On Sunday 26th April Rebecca Fairley will host a study visit to The Whitworth Gallery, Manchester to see their current textiles exhibition.
This first exhibition since the gallery reopened last month celebrates the colour green and its associates. Through the work of historic and contemporary designers, the exhibition explores the meaning of green. It’s association with nature; growth, fertility and rebirth and also as the symbolic colour of the environmental movement. The textiles exhibited range from 3rd century AD to the present day with work from contemporary designers who have responded to environmental issues. Artists and designers represented include William Morris, C. F. A. Voysey. Lucienne Day, Keith Vaughan, Michele Walker and Susie MacMurray.
As part of the study visit you will have the opportunity to look at and handle a number of pieces of work from the gallery’s TACTILE too collection.  This is a body of work that focuses on emerging textile makers in the North West.  For more information before the visit please follow this link
The Gallery has many other exhibitions that may be of interest to students including Cornelia Parker’s response to materials in her major solo show, Cai Guo-Qiang’s spectacular landscape created using explosive materials and Thomas Schutte’s print installation of etchings.
The study visit will provide the opportunity to examine the exhibition with fellow students and the textiles course leader, to discuss and share ideas about the work.
