Penni Redding

I recently mentioned to Textiles Curriculum Leader Sarah Taylor that we needed to see more textiles student work on WeAreOCA. ‘Penni Redding!’ she replied ‘I have just seen some of her work. Get hold of it and put it on the blog.’ So here we are and the minute I opened the box from Penni, I could see exactly what Sarah was so enthused about.
The challenge was to convey the nature of the work on the flat screen. The work is from Textiles 2: Contemporary Practice and assignment two deals with sustainable textiles and there is a lot of it. I decided to limit what we tried to get across to the part of the assignment dealing with lifecycle, reuse and recycling and to seek to convey just two aspects. The video flip through shows Penni’s workflow – the first half shows pages from Penni’s learning log and the second half of the associated work samples. The image below is a small detail from sample 3 and seeks to convey something of the feel of Penni’s work, the beautiful tactile nature of it. Click on the image to immerse yourself.

  • It is always good to see examples of project work and the personal take on creative interpretation. This was a lively body of work in response to materials and research findings. There was a nice link for Penni as she used sustainable sari waste for her textile sampling which gave an interesting take on ‘lifecycle, reuse and recycling’.
Hope this encourages all those embarking on this course. We will be featuring more of Penni’s projects from Textiles 2: Contemporary Practice in the new year, so watch this space!

  • Thank you everyone for your kind words – I was delighted to be asked and consider it to be a great opportunity. I look forward to seeing the work of other students featured here soon as it’s something I value greatly and consider vital to feeling part of a student community.
