OCA Music: Flute recordings

As part of a developing collaboration with UCA’s music department, I visited the new recording studios at the Farnham campus on 27 March. I recorded some flute music by UCA composers as part of a film music project, and, in return, was given the opportunity to use the studio facilities to record solo flute works by OCA composers. Four students responded to the call for pieces.

This Old Thing is a project in which I’ll be wearing only charity shop-bought occasion dresses for two weeks. I’ll also be posting diary entries and a photo a day of me going about my normal life, doing mundane things. I want to use this to explore the various overlapping and contradictory ways we value our clothing, by being overdressed in garments which someone else threw away.

My body of work Target Practice developed from my interest in LGBTQ hidden histories. I became focused on the experience of gay men in Nazi concentration camps when I read about the biography of Josef Kohout, a Nazi concentration camp survivor.

Collage has been used as an artform for many years but when students approach it during their studies it can feel like something children do so has little value or skill. However there is a surprising amount of dexterity and technical skill required working with small pieces of sticky paper. In textiles collage is used primarily as a form of drawing either to develop ideas or plan designs so it is worth mastering.

Open Art Collective was created by members of the OCA Thames Valley Group, undergraduates and graduate alumni studying photography, drawing and visual communications. ‘Time’ is our first group exhibition, the result of our shared interest in developing personal work and artistic interests alongside our OCA courses.
