Zoom: Melanie Dornier

Melanie Dornier is a French student on the Social Documentary course and is based in Suzhou, China. She emailed me about a month ago to say that she had an exhibition of her work on show at the Gallerie Des Cents Pas, Besancon, France. Now unbeknown to most readers of WeAreOCA for the last couple of months I have had a queue of photography students to write about and have been waiting for my colleagues to post on other subject areas so that photography doesn’t dominate. Melanie’s exhibition runs from the beginning of May to the beginning of July. So I was rather embarrassed when I emailed her to say I was ready to write a post and to discuss which images to use. Well it turns out that things have moved on and Melanie has had her work selected for a competition Zoom 2011 which is running in association with le Salon de la Photo.
So, OCA students are invited to look at Melanie’s work here and to vote for her (to vote: scroll down and click on Melanie’s name at the bottom of the page) . Being shortlisted for Zoom 2011 is a considerable achievement in itself, 12 editors of French photo magazines were invited to pick one emerging photographer that they wanted to support. So congratulations to Melanie for getting this far and bon chance for the competition.

  • Wow! Congratulations Melany! Fantastic image this one. I did recognise the buildings from Dewald’s work. Such a small world.

    • Haha… Yiann, here are so many of them that they all look kind of the same! Quite surreal, isn’t it?
Congrats Melanie! We’ll have to celebrate with a coffee again when you get back!

  • Many congratulations Melanie – impressive work. I was very struck by your use of colour and texture in these social documentary images. I didn’t realise until these quite how I had got used to seeing relatively uninflected styles for documentary images. Very interesting.

  • I really appreciate the fact that you are trying to leave space for posts on other subjects; according to the archive there have only been 7 textile related posts since March 2010! communication through the blog and forums is so important in distance learning to avoid isolation. Thanks.

  • I think its great to see so many photography students doing so well, and I always like to read about them and see their work – very inspiring. Would be nice to read about some art students doing well too though:)

  • Hello Penny, just to let you know, we have a new textiles contributor starting on posts from July because we are sorely aware of the gap. We are also getting a new creative writing contributor.

    • Just voted in support of Melanie and it should be noted that to vote you click on the person’s name as stated in the opening post. Then on the next page enter an email address, confirm your selection and you’ll be sent an email with a link to click which validates your vote.
Some very nice work amongst the different photographers there and interesting to see what’s being viewed as up and coming.

  • Congratulations Melanie – lovely work. Your shot of the girl studying under a small lamp is perfect for project 9 ‘suggesting more with less’ don’t your think?
