Join OCA tutor Wendy McMurdo on the 4 February at Side Gallery in Newcastle.
“Detroit is my hometown, but I’ve been gone for over three decades. As a child growing up, my dad, who worked all his life for General Motors, used to joke and say that we had motor oil in our veins. Even after all these years I still believe there is some small truth to what he said…
…My hope is that this work will convey in many ways that Detroit is a city made up of resilient, strong individuals who have withstood many harsh realities, all the while clinging to the vanished ideals of an urban oasis that once prided itself as one of the most beautiful and prosperous cities in America, at one time a model city for all others to follow, but one which has now fallen from grace. This project bares witness to the fact that Detroit is not a story about what’s been destroyed, but more importantly about what’s been left behind and those who are coping with it.”

  • It was great to attend a study visit in my own region. A very engaging session with great input from Tutor Wendy McMurdo as usual. I was really encouraged to meet other students studying in my area and hope we can keep in touch. I look forward to meeting you all in the future.

  • I found the visit very rewarding, it is good to spend time with fellow students who have a shared interest and expand my knowledge of the photographic world. Social documentary photography is an area that I find fascinating due to the mixed messages it gives. Wendy was very good in leading the talk but also encourage each of us to add our thoughts to the “mix”. A very good enlightening day.
