Simon Roberts: We English
Simon Roberts’ We English exhibition is still showing at the National Media Museum in Bradford for those who have not yet had a chance to pay it a visit. The museum’s website provides as an introduction to his work:
“Simon Roberts took his photographs using a large format camera, producing prints that reveal a fantastic level of detail across vast expanses of terrain. He rejoices in his subject matter and the way the landscape is transformed through our consumption of and, interaction with it. Gathered together as We English, his works are an intriguing and lyrical, personal exploration of Englishness.”
Roberts’ photographs draw instant parallels to the paintings of L.S. Lowry in their depiction of English life from a few paces back. Taken with a quizzical eye; they provide us with an intriguing view of the strange and the beautiful ways of ‘we English’.
The National Media Museum is running a competition off the back of the We English exhibition, encouraging photographers to make the most of the Museum’s Yorkshire surroundings this summer: We English, our Yorkshire Photography Competition.
