Power visit

Biloxi Mississippi 2005 from American Power, copyright Mitch Epstein

The final study visit of 2011 takes us to Liverpool and the newly reopened Open Eye Gallery. On Thursday 15 December we will visit the galley’s two opening exhibitions.
The first is Mitch Epstein’s American Power which earlier this year won the Prix Pictet for photography on issues of sustainability. In an interview with the BJP Mitch Epstein said ‘…American Power looks at the landscape as a reflection of the society, it looks at how the choices society has made have manifested themselves in the environment.’ I was critical of the Pictet jury decision at the time. Not because I didn’t appreciate Mitch Epstein’s work, but rather because I thought that choosing an American large format fine art photographer for the prize was both a safe choice and a wasted opportunity to advance other voices. The Open Eye show is an opportunity to see American Power as large prints, which as those who joined the Struth visit earlier this year will recognise can be a completely different experience to seeing work on the web or in books.
The second exhibition is Chris Steele Perkins’ The Pleasure Principle. Perkins describes how England was a country he never really felt part of and his work will give us the opportunity to reflect on whether the past really is another country.
So plenty to see and talk about and a great opportunity to meet other students. The visit is free and will start at 11am. Sign up by sending an email to enquiries@oca-uk.com Joining instructions will be emailed about a week before the visit.
