Photography competitions

Jon Levy draws the distinction between two very different types of competition in this video. The mentions of particular awards come thick and fast so here are some links:
World Press Photo
Inge Morath Award
Amnesty Media Awards
One World Media Awards
And Jon’s own summershow and the ‘people’s choice award’

  • I can see the video now, but when I try and play it I get an “Ooops, something broke” message – I get this with some of the videos that get posted on here, but not all of them (I could see the previous one in this series for example).
Is this a mac thing or is there something else at work…?

  • Hmmm, I’m using a Mac and it seems to play okay. Are you using an up-to-date browser? These videos are now being embedded as html5 videos instead of Flash-based videos, so older browsers (and Internet Explorer) might struggle. To prevent this post from turning into a tech-based discussion, could you please email me at paulvincent[at]oca-uk[dot com] with your browser info Rob?
    Many thanks,
    Paul

  • The video worked for me. It’s a HD video so a bit stuttery on a slow connection. It’s quite an interesting video, and Foto8 (which is where the ‘people’s choice’ link takes you to) looks intriguing.

  • Hmmm! Interesting. I generally ignore ‘people’s choice’ competitions because my experience on forums suggests that the predictable wide angle landscape with super-saturated colours and no stroy usually come out top – but this is clearly not in that mould. Perhaps the visitors to the gallery are a bit more fine-arty types

  • To the people’s choice mentioned by n. moncton of wide angle landscape I’d add Baby pictures. But i would add a further category of competition which is really trying to capture as many entrants capture their details and then flood them with spam.
