Liverpool’s Open Eye Gallery describes Sicilian photographer Letizia Battaglia’s retrospective ‘Breaking the Code of Silence‘ as an opportunity ‘to reflect on the role of photography as an individual and collective means for taking action, bearing witness, providing evidence and documenting history.’ The work, taken over twenty years, records one of the darkest and most brutal periods of Italian history during which organised crime tyrannised the population and subverted the law and legitimate government through bribery and terror.
Uncomfortable viewing, but work which raises plenty of issues. Issues worth discussing. Photography tutor Keith Roberts will lead a study visit to the exhibition on Saturday 26 April. Places are free to OCA students, to book email enquiries@oca-uk.com
