Lessons in Posing Subjects

Join Keith Roberts on the 13 December at 11am in Liverpool.
First we will visit Open Eye Gallery to look at the work of Robert Heinecken. He is today considered one of the most influential post-war American photographers. However, his work is still relatively unknown in Europe.
The exhibition represents a unique opportunity for approaching the artist’s complex and varied practice. This process rarely included the use of photographic apparatus, so much so that Heinecken described himself as a “para-photographer”. He was instead mostly interested in exploring the notion of photography as an expanded field of experimentation, often operating at the intersection of Pop and Conceptual Art.
The exhibition at Open Eye Gallery focuses on the Polaroids Heinecken took between 1976 and 1982 with a SX-70 camera. With well over 250 Polaroid photographs alongside sketchbooks and magazine cuttings on display, this presentation is one of the most comprehensive surveys of its kind to date and a UK premiere.

Following this we will visit the Walker Art Gallery to see The Gang – a stunning collection of work by leading American photographer, Catherine Opie.
“I made The Gang after individually shooting them all for the 1991 body of work, Being and Having. It was great to see them with their moustaches and I couldn’t resist making some group photos of them… I think it is perfect in celebrating Homotopia as this work was made 20 years ago, in relationship to visibility within my own queer community. It is good to celebrate and reflect on equality that has been achieved and celebrated as well as the fight in regards to homophobia that continues.”

  • Many thanks Keith for a most worthwhile study visit. I probably went against the grain but I really got a lot out of Robert Heinecken’s work. At first I thought he was just an obsessive but his attention to detail caught my eye after a while and it is this detail that I am lacking in some of my portrait work for people and place.
His use of various media was also interesting. It’s not all about pressing the shutter.
Thanks also for the lunchtime discussion and book recommendations.
