Dewald Botha

OCA tutor and assessor Sharon Boothroyd looks at the work of photography student Dewald Botha. This was Dewald’s final Level 3 unit and he has excelled in a different genre. This submission is playful and loose in comparison to the tight constraints of the last but equally successful. Sharon shows how he treats each project individually and uniquely but it all hangs together overall.

  • It is great to see Dewald’s L3 work here, I have really learned a lot from watching him develop this project (and the previous ones) and I could never thank him enough for that!
Best of luck Dewald for your post-OCA photographic journey!

  • Lovely to see the work again here. Dewlap was so generous in sharing his thoughts and process and I’ve certainly missed his presence on the forums etc. I do hope that one day, you might return to the OCA (and maybe even to the UK) Dewald. Very Best Wishes to you, wherever you are at the moment.

  • Great to see your work recognised Dewald….was hoping to hear you speak after not hearing you on the [(6)] video due to the distance constraints. Hope all is going well with you. Best of luck for the future and keep your photography moving on…you have a great talent and eye.

  • Both the work shown and the commentary by Sharon are equally informative. Thanks for highlighting this work. Echoing others above, miss you on the forums Dewald—wherever in the world you are at the moment.

  • Hi Sharon and everyone else! What a nice surprise! Thank you so much…
I do miss being part of the OCA group very much, especially the structure the studies gave me… true, Adv and YOP were so open, that nothing stops me from continuing in the same way, into the next body of work…
I had a break from it while in SA for three / four months, and now back in Brno, Czech Republic just over a month and half… pretty much settled in again, and finally feel I can move on.
A week or so ago I managed to spend a packed and interesting weekend in Munich at Shaun and Heidi’s, gallery hopping and doing several walks with Shaun, it was great to meet another
classmate’ in person. I did miss having Susanne in Shanghai near the end 🙂
So yes, I should get to the UK at some point and meet up with many of you….
It goes without saying that you were / are all part of the group I bounced ideas off… and of course Clive’s hand is in there too.
What was most interesting about the video above was Sharon speaking about Adv. She was my tutor for YOP, and saw the module develop, and as she said, was very personal… so to hear how she describes the differences in the two modules is interesting at least!
    I haven’t disappeared….
Good luck with all of your studies, modules, and projects / bodies of work…
    D.

    • It was a great weekend, so happy to meet someone I have talked to virtually for so many years. Love the video, interesting to see a concise discussion of how your work developed. Mine seems to go round in circles at the moment…
