rarescale Summer School

Once again, the Open College of the Arts are offering subsidised places to attend rarescale’s composition summer school. This residential week takes place at Harlaxton Manor near Grantham, Lincolnshire from 31 July to 5 August, with tutors Carla Rees and Michael Oliva. The course runs alongside a flute performance course, and participants are encouraged to collaborate on new works during the week. The course is an excellent opportunity to try out new ideas, take creative risks and to develop your work under the expert guidance of the tutors. A number of works conceived during this course have since received public performance and many are now published by Tetractys.
There are three courses open to OCA students:
Electronic composition: this course is suitable for everyone from complete beginners to experienced electroacoustic composers. Under the guidance of Michael Oliva, composition professor at the Royal College of Music, composers will learn how to make field recordings and use these as a basis for a new piece which will be performed at the end of the week.
Acoustic composition: composers are invited to write acoustic works for participants of the flute course, either solo, in small ensembles or for the full group, ranging from piccolo to contrabass flute. Participants will be able to attend rehearsals and get a sense of the inner workings of the flute ensemble format. Works written during the course will be performed on the final evening.
Composition retreat: aimed at students with a little more experience, this is the ideal course for level 3 composition students. Come and work on your project in an independent programme of study, taking in as many or as few of the course’s classes and rehearsals as you wish. Advice and one to one sessions with course tutors will help you to explore your ideas further, and players are available to try out any flute writing you might want to try.

The cost for attending the course is £375 including shared accommodation and food. Single rooms are available for a £75 surcharge. Non residents are also welcome to attend the course, for a fee of £225 including lunch and dinner each day.
