New music course coming soon: Stylistic techniques

I am delighted to announce that the writing of the Level 4 Stylistic Techniques course is underway. The course is being written by Gavin Wayte, who has recently joined our music tutor team. Gavin is an active composer and conductor with a passion for collaboration. He is an experienced HE teacher and in addition to his work at OCA, currently lectures in Academic Studies at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester.
The new course combines composition with music history by exploring the main compositional styles of each era through case study works by key composers. The assignments and exercises will encourage students to develop skills in harmony and analysis, as well as providing practical experience of creating music in the style of different composers. Through gaining an understanding of the development of stylistic approaches, students will develop an increased sense of context for their own creative work.
Stylistic techniques will be a core unit in our music degree and completes the provision of units for the first level of the degree. The course will be available from early 2017.
