Music Study Visits 2015-16

We are excited to be able to announce a varied programme of music study visits for this academic year. These events are ideal for broadening your range of musical experience, as well as meeting fellow students and tutors. One day events are usually free to attend and we would encourage all registered music students to make the most of these opportunities, and other creative arts students are welcome to attend too.

26 November 2015
Experience the old and the new at the Handel House, London

The Handel House, in Brook Street, London, was Handel’s home from 1723 until the end of his life, in 1759. OCA students will be given a guided tour of the building where he composed some of his most famous works, including the Messiah. Students will also be able to hear a sound installation by the current Handel House composer in residence, Edwin Hillier, inspired by music by Handel, Bach and Scarlatti, who were all born in the same year (1685).

This Study Visit is being timed to coincide with contemporary music ensemble rarescale’s recital in the CiR series. Carla Rees (OCA’s Programme Leader for music) will be performing music for flutes of all kinds, with electronics performed by Michael Oliva, including the premieres of a new work for baroque flute and electronics, and contemporary and baroque repertoire played on baroque and modern flutes. Participants in the Study Visit will be given open access to the ensemble’s soundcheck, and will be able to attend the recital itself. This is a rare opportunity to witness a world-class chamber ensemble at work behind the scenes, in a small and intimate setting.

There are a maximum of 20 places available on this Study Visit, so early booking is recommended. Start time is to be confirmed, but will take into account time to allow students to travel to London. The concert will end at 7.30pm approx.

Vocal Composition Study Day 9.30am-5pm

Join OCA tutor Chris Lawry for a composition workshop at MAC Birmingham. Students will be invited to write a short piece for Mezzo Soprano (with or without piano accompaniment) and selected pieces will be workshopped with tutors and performers. The day will also include an advice session on writing for voices and choirs.

11 June 2016
Gamelan Workshop at the South Bank Centre, London

This Study Visit is your opportunity to gain hands on experience with Javanese Gamelan at London’s South Bank Centre. Explore the music that influenced leading composers of the twentieth century, including Debussy, Boulez, Messiaen, Cage and others. Students will take part in a 2 hour playing session (beginning at 3pm) under the guidance of expert tutors, with an opportunity afterwards for discussion and networking. This is an unmissable opportunity! This Study Visit is limited to 20 participants, so early booking is recommended.

1-6 August 2016
rarescale Composition Summer School

Once again this year, the OCA is providing reduced cost places for composers at rarescale’s annual summer school. This residential week provides composers with opportunities for collaboration and performance under the guidance of Carla Rees and Michael Oliva (professor of composition at the Royal College of Music), as well as the chance to meet and work alongside composers of all levels, from students to professionals. For further details about the 2016 course, please contact Carla Rees. Details of the 2015 course can be seen on WeAreOCA here:
