Composition bursaries available

OCASA has generously agreed to fund a small number of bursaries to enable OCA students to attend this year’s rarescale Summer School at Harlaxton Manor.
The course is an intensive week of creative music making, composition and collaboration, under the guidance of composer Michael Oliva (professor of composition at the Royal College of Music in London) and Carla Rees, OCA’s music programme leader.
Students enrolled on an OCA Level 4 or 5 course can take part in the acoustic or electroacoustic composition courses, in which each participant composes a new work during the week for an informal performance at the end of the week. Daily classes are combined with time to compose and the opportunity to collaborate with one of the performers attending the concurrent flute course. Composers may also choose to write for the resident flute ensemble, and will be given opportunities to workshop and rehearse their piece. For those interested in the use of technology, classes are available on electroacoustic composition, including field recording, sound design and using software to compose. No previous experience is necessary, and the course provides a friendly environment for experimentation and exploration of new ideas.

Level 6 students may also enrol on the composition retreat, which is an ideal opportunity to work on the final degree project with the support of other composers and performers.
The course takes place at Harlaxton Manor, in Lincolnshire, from 30 July to 4 August. Accommodation is available at the venue, and a non-resident option is also on offer. For more information, click here. Contact Carla with any questions or to book.
