Study Visit to see graphic designer Tony Arefin in Birmingham

The next visual communications study visit looks at the work of graphic designer Tony Arefin (1962-2000) on Saturday 3 November.

Arefin & Arefin: The graphic design of Tony Arefin (12 September – 4 November 2012) at The IKON gallery in Birmingham, charts his rise to prominence in the 1980s when Arefin worked with contemporary artists and galleries on some of the seminal catalogues, publications and exhibitions associated with the Young British Art movement, such as the contemporary art magazine Freeze (1988) and the exhibition Modern Medicine (1990).  His print based design work helped present a diverse range of artist associated with the YBA movement through his irreverent and intelligent use of photography, typography and colour.
Later, Arefin moved to New York, becoming creative director of I.D. magazine, and from there into the advertising industry, working as art director at the agency Wieden & Kennedy and partner at Ogilvy & Mather. Nicknamed ‘Tony’ by his mother, Abed Mohammed Arefi he was born in Karachi and relocated to London in 1974 as a result of political upheavals in Pakistan. This is the first survey of his short but influential career and the exhibition, curated by designer James Langdon, aims to ‘rediscovers the contribution of an important but overlooked designer”.
