PINK

I am delighted to have been given permission by Sarah to share her powerful video which uses the word pink and was made as part of an assignment two submission for the mixed media course.
Pink works well as a sound and colour piece. I found myself reading a feminist angle into it as the word pink is deconstructed and made vicious at times.
Text and language seem quite important in mixed media as a course, but it can be hard to work out how to move between text and non text. Quite often work produced for this assignment is an illumination of a text (the word written in a font or with extensions to the lettering which give more information or belie its meaning as a word or phrase). Another popular solution is an illustration of the text – a piece of visual art that has a word or phrase embedded in it which supports or negates the imagery.
What excites me about this piece is that I feel as if I Sarah has taken time (through extensive experimentation and research) to immerse herself in an individual word and taken a word down into something beyond or before language which is rare.Sarah is exploring the materiality of language if that is even a thing; its chewiness, its spittle, its colours and its structure inside the mouth.

  • Hi, I get a message: “Because of its privacy settings, this video cannot be played here”. Any idea if this is a setting on my Mac, using Safari or could it be be something to do with the location – Switzerland?

  • Thanks Paul, worked fine now.
Sarah – and interesting and for me a bit uncomfortable piece. I guess I see it through very different eyes and keep on wondering what the rest of the face looks like and when the lips will stop saying ‘pink’.
    Well done.
