Newcastle Study Visit
On Saturday 8 February 2014 there is an opportunity to join a study visit led by OCA tutor Gerald Deslandes and for students in the North East to meet up.
To start with we will view the work of Dame Laura Knight (1877 –1970). This exhibition at the Laing Art Gallery of over thirty portraits touring from the National Gallery reveals Knight’s highly distinctive and vivid work. It also illustrates her success in gaining greater professional recognition for women in the arts.
After lunch we will make our way to the Baltic Art Centre. There we will visit an installation by the German artist, Thomas Bayrle, whose work mixes imagery from digital sources, comic books and popular culture.
Finally we will see sculpture by the much-exhibited Glasgow-based sculptor, Sara Barker, whose work OCA students have seen at Leeds Art Gallery, Tate Liverpool and the Saatchi Gallery and a film by the Finnish artist, Salla Tykkä, before a round-up and a chance to socialise in the café.
The regional event is funded by OCASA: the Open College of the Arts Student Association. Places are free, to book email: enquiries@oca-uk.com
The painting by Laura Knight is one of my most favourite paintings. Wish I lived nearer.

Its an excellent exhibition and well worth a visit.
Thanks for that Jim that’s very helpful.
It is interesting when study visits include two very different kind of exhibitions. It can stimulate different ways of thinking but, inevitably, comparisons arise. I sometimes worry that one experience will dilute the other. That said, I am thinking of arranging a dual study trip myself. What do others think?
When viewing two different exhibitions it may be necessary to compartmentalise the events at the time but does not a broad knowledge base enhance contemporary practice? Each viewers reflective interpretation having an different effect on their work even when the information gleaned from the exhibition is the same. I like the idea of a dual study trip for this reason..
On an only slightly related note – can someone remind me how I sign up for this visit?
Hi Nigel, to sign up email enquiries@oca-uk.com
Thank you Jim – I can now see that I should have read all the way to the end. Doh!
