Lynne Chapman on Sketchbooks

Lynne Chapman has been a successful children’s author and illustrator for 25 years and we were delighted when she agreed to be interviewed by the OCA. Jane and Mark went to interview her. Here she is talking about sketchbooks, but she will feature in further videos on illustration in OCA Elements shortly.

  • hi!you are good to draw.
u always take the watercolor and sketch book ,go outside to draw?
I study textile design.this year,i do my graduate’s project.i do the tulip, but i dont know how to weave tulip.maybe from it’s grow to a flower.

  • Brilliant Lynne – an inspiration – I’m just starting (well, I’ve been on and off for about 20 years!!) and spend lots of times on trains going to auditions… sitting around… what with life its easy to let the fun get squeezed out when you’re ‘doing a course’ and teacher (Sorry OCA) videos tend to have a ‘air’ about them that just turns me off – but your video was brilliant – and the sketchbooks fun and inspirational!! Well done! A I could do that… reach for the sketchbook moment!!!!!! Thanks!

  • You are an amazing artist. You have reinspired me. Thank-you so much for showing us your beautiful work. I also loved the colourful room you were in, along with the surroundings! I’ve got to go now–my sketchbook and pencils are calling out for me!

  • I loved this video – about ‘the joy of drawing’ and keeping it alive. I have a really tiny but thick sketchbook which I use a lot as I can keep it in my handbag and that has a lot of people in cafes in it. Must draw the station platform next time I’m going by train!

  • I have just watched the video, brilliant. I love buying sketch books and I have a drawer full of them, all empty! I am now going to open one and make a start. Thank you for giving me inspiration.

  • I think your video sums up the benefits of sketching very well. I enjoyed seeing your work – always fascinating to see someone else’s sketches. I’ve really just started to sketch. My work isn’t much good, but I’m finding it great fun – kind of liberating. Also, I’m getting used to people looking over my shoulder and making comments – I just have to remember that I’m doing the sketch for me, not for them, so it doesn’t matter if they are critical (most of the comments are very nice).

  • I am doing the OCA drawing course, I have a long commute every day from Reading to Acton and seldom get a seat, I have thought about taking a sketch book, but due to no room, have been reading every art book under the sun instead. However seeing the great video I will make more of an effort, Great Stuff!

  • thanks you really have inspired me i see so much i would like to sketch you have encouraged me to get on with it many thanks.

  • I’m on a photography course because I love art but can’t draw. I find I can’t take my camera everywhere, but I can take my scruffy notebook and I am starting to sketch (line draw) from other artists work – painters, photographers, sculptors even. It started off as a thought jogger but its really bringing a new dimension to my photography and my composition.
My drawings are nothing like these, more akin to spider art – the patterns they create when running around trying to get out of the bathtub. But Carol S is right, I find people are very interested and positive about what I’m doing.
Great little video and very beautiful sketch books.

  • Thank you so much – I am really pleased that you are finding the film inspiring. Anything that gets more people picking up sketchbooks and having a go is a very good thing!
If you want to see more of my sketchbook work, there are lots on my website and the background behind them can be read on my blog at http://lynnechapman.blogspot.com/ or on Flickr (link from the blog).
    Happy sketching!
