Lucy Dean

‘That is where the art is…’ Lucy’s gestural drawings are loaded with the experience of making, she has engaged with her material and feels the form, the weight, the sizes and shapes of the body. Her drawings are alive, they flow and move, it isn’t about making a pretty picture.

  • Lucy’s response: I used a multitude of drawing implements from bubble wrap wands, skewers and sticks to plants immersed in ink in order to produce these large-scale studies of the human figure. My aim was to try to capture the gesture and emotion of each pose.

  • I appreciate the outlined qualities of these drawings in the video, but what strikes me is the imbalance between the explicit focus of the Drawing 1 course materials on accurate observation and skill development as opposed to the enthusiasm for a completely different kind of drawing style at assessment time. Maybe it should be more clearly reflected in the course materials what assessors are actually looking for.

  • These drawings show that, as well as looking with our eyes, we feel involved physically and emotionally in our response to the subject. This comes across to the viewer because the artist herself was involved whilst drawing. Working large like this is a good idea because it can help you free up, as can using unconventional tools.

  • wow brilliant the movement is well done there is a great deal of fluidity in the poses. particularly enjoyed looking at the final pose great structure and depth. I would love to see the originals!
