OCA tutor and assessor Doug Burton looks at how Sculpture 1 student Gael Fisher, uses drawing to influence her sculpture.
Doug’s aim in this video is to show how a student can ambitiously take an idea and a method of practice, and combine the two to create an exciting body of work. He talks about his interest in seeing Gael’s making of sculptural work that explores line, and then use of this exploration to inform her drawing, creating a body of thought provoking pieces.

  • It’s good to see how drawing and sculpture can be used together. I remember way back when I was a first year student at Art College, I was very interested in sculpture and drawing. I wasn’t too impressed by the kind of drawing going on in the Sculpture department at the time. I asked the tutor if my drawings could deal with form, but also have backgrounds. Could they be, for instance, works in their own right rather than working drawings. He laughed at me, as the whole notion of anything painterly, such as background, creeping in was alien to him. I’m glad to see there is much more tolerance now. These are lovely drawings Gael and work on their own as well as explorations for your sculptures.

  • Hello Mark,
Thank you for your very clear explanation of the reason for highlighting Gael’s work. Your clarity makes it possible for me, as a very new student to Drawing 1, to appreciate the quality of the work and to see the artistic intention behind it, in a way I would be unlikey to have recognised without.
