OCA North event: Thinking through art – a workshop
The title of this workshop is taken from a book edited by Kate Macleod and Lin Holdridge about the relationship between art and thought.
The first section will deal with the basics of contextual research. This is just a chance to hear some strategies for embarking on a research topic, of finding resources and then utilising them to develop your opinion and understanding.
The second section will deal with research through materials and to give you space to decide for yourselves whether you think art is a form of research. Again, we will look at strategies for materials research and art as research.
For each section it would be really useful to be able to work from examples of your own projects so please do bring your own work. We will look at some people’s work as case studies, but also have a chance to develop your own resources so that you can use them in your work.

I am a music student, (freelance musician) struggling a bit with the academic essay writing side and having difficulty finding suitable research material. No problem with writing in general – love it! Will this day be of benefit to me?
Hello Fionagh, I’ve been asked by the group to run the day and I will be looking at gathering research more than essay writing. I wonder if your PL, Carla, or your tutor has some resources that could help you? You do say here though that your main issue has been actually locating the resources in the first place so perhaps it would be useful as that is one of the foci of the day?
Any chance of this being repeated elsewhere in the UK?

Hello Sue (is that Sue?) and Jennifer. There are a few critical thinking, study skills and research study visits going on around the UK ( I think you are in Australia Sue?). I’m going to do the work for this one and then I’ll connect with other people doing similar things and see what can be done. Jennifer, I think Michele is doing something in the south west, and Bryan is doing something in the North of England. Becka is doing something online for textiles students. There are probably more. Remember too that your tutor can help you with all of this, do ask them for specific advice about how to research.

Emma will be running another iteration of this event with the OCA London group in May, see the study event diary for sign up details.
We are currently looking at group work and how we can build it into the learning design as a core offer rather than purely extra curricular. This and workshops such as the Textiles Critical Thinking online seminars and the VCrit events are relative to all students and all students should be able to benefit from attending something similar whether online or in person. I think it is important that there is also something tangible left behind be it in the form of a guide, video or discussion forum to carry on the learning and thinking after the event. It is high on our agenda and we are piloting various initiatives.
Would this be appropriate for a Moving Image Student? I am hoping to attend as it is close to me
Yes, I am not planning to make it discipline specific in any way, it is just a chance to think about how we use research in arts practice in general.
