Arts & Environment study day at YSP

Join OCA tutor Dan Robinson for a summer Arts & Environment study day at Yorkshire Sculpture Park as part of a student group on Sunday 26 August 2018. Visit and discuss the YSP and explore the theme of arts in the environment.

We will start the day with an introduction and visit to Common Ground at Bothy Gallery and Garden Gallery. Dan has worked alongside two of the exhibiting artists, Andy Goldsworthy and Alec Finlay and has specialist knowledge of site-specific art. We will relate ideas from Common Ground to students own practices, considering what strategies students can ‘borrow’ in their own creative responses to landscape. (see Review of Common Ground in Aesthetica Magazine).

Following this we will explore various other works situated in the spaces and landscape of YSP, (time and weather permitting), including:

Acclaimed installation Beyond Time by performance artist Chiharu Shiota who has created an awe-inspiring, site-specific installation of thread within the beautiful 18th-century Chapel.
Giuseppe Penone: A Tree in the Wood in the Underground Gallery and Open Air. One of the most eminent artists working today, Giuseppe Penone presents his extensive new exhibition in YSP’s light-filled Underground Gallery and across the historic landscape.
James Webb’s Supernature (2018), a sound work by South African artist James Webb in which the artist tells stories between trees. Broadcast from speakers concealed within trees around the YSP landscape Webb gives an audio reading of the Bretton Estate, paying special attention to the presence, history and imaginative possibility of trees.

Students may wish to explore these independently or with the group. Walking around the park and exhibitions, Dan will be available to chat about any aspect of your creative practice and OCA studies. You can use this visit as part of first hand research for OCA course work.

YSP is part of Yorkshire Sculpture Triangle, with The Henry Moore Institute, The Hepworth Wakefield and Leeds Art Gallery
