In bricks and mortar universities students aren’t required to fully organise their own exhibition and I was envious of this at one stage. Having come out the other side I see how this experience has benefited me: knowledge, confidence and an extended network of contacts for the future. As the Arts Development Officer at the council said “We know about you now…” – opportunities will arise.

In this post we celebrate the learning journey of photographer and OCA student, Anne Bryson. Earlier this year, Anne exited the Photography degree at the end of level 2 with the award Diploma in Higher Education (DipHE). After a short study break she decided to take the short course, Investigating Place with Psychogeography and used this to further extend a project exploring the coal mines in the Forest of Dean. She caught up with programme leader Dan Robinson.

I’m a mature student currently studying OCA’s Music Foundation Course before moving on to their Music Degree Programme once I’ve finished that. If it wasn’t for OCA it would be impossible for me to continue music studies to a higher level. You see, my situation is different to say the least. Let me give you a brief idea.

Sally, the absolute antithesis of a ‘sissy’, Sally, a woman with chutzpah, who had just been diagnosed with a recurrence of her breast cancer and who, when I finally decided to grasp the nettle and face my own mental discomforts, was more than happy to become my exemplar of the naked post-menopausal: “Invisible Woman made Visible”.

To study as a distant learner with OCA might seem to be a lonely endeavour. However, there are many ideas and opportunities to collaborate with fellow students. Collaboration can be a core to one’s contemporary art practice. It goes beyond the making of a shared object.

My hope is that we can resume in person meetings as soon as practicable with a combination of tutor contributions, gallery visits and more informal meetings. We could also continue to meet remotely recognising that it is a useful addition to our programme and aids access.

An accessible exhibition

Attending the exhibition, looking at the work and speaking with the artist is something that Leonard wanted to ensure all the people that he invited could do. You see, Leonard is visually impaired, and mobility-impaired disabled, so making the exhibition accessible to all was something that he was conscious of achieving and he has done that in bucket-loads.
