So, it was with great excitement at the recent Assessment event in Barnsley that we delved into Amardeep Kaur’s world. As a current OCA Textiles student, she has used her recent course to wholeheartedly embrace colour, pattern, motif, print and stitch techniques in order to initiate a strongly personal journey with a rich signature of bold colour and stylised design with a growing confidence shown through additional surface embellishments.

What is Ecopoetry and why write it?

Eco-poetry, then, in the sense I’m talking about, takes the human and the natural world as undeniably connected and does not prioritise one over the other. The human and natural worlds are not exclusive of one another, and the natural is not something to be ‘conquered.’ Eco-poetry does not centre on a human viewpoint; it is inclusive of plant, animal, landscape. It can make us look at the experiences of the life we share the planet with in a completely new way.

The importance of open-access

At OCA all our offers are unconditional. Through our open-access policy we do not require students to have specific prior qualifications and welcome all who want to study onto our courses. This has been the case since OCA was founded, as we believe that education is a right, not a privilege, and all should have the opportunities to study.

Brighton Photo Biennial: Update

From 26 to 28 October OCA will be running a weekend study visit to the Brighton Photo Biennial. The weekend will run from 2pm on Friday to 2pm on Sunday and students can attend for the whole weekend or specific days.

What happens to a place once the film crew has left?

Some places are used to being film sets and one more film doesn’t affect their sense of themselves – think of Paris, New York or Venice. Small communities however can find the consequences of being used as the backdrop to a feature film disruptive and even traumatic. I have just come back from the north coast of the Kola Peninsula in Arctic Russia where I’ve been researching a new film.
