OCA is pleased to announce a new online induction course, open to all OCA students. We really hope you will all take the time to do this course, since it will definitely help you with your studies. Entitled: An introduction to Study in HE, the course covers a range of topics highly pertinent to studying for a degree from home. At the end of the course you will come away with a report of the reflections you’ve made and commitments you will have signed up to (for yourself). The course covers the following aspects of study:
Managing your studies and your digital environment
Managing stress
Approaches to learning
Collecting information: Reading, Finding, evaluating and using
Note-taking
Developing your learning log and using blogs
Your sketchbook
Learning through group discussion
We’d love to hear how you get on with the course. Just log onto the OCA student site with your normal log in and you will find a link to it on the home page. Enjoy and learn!

  • It’s really interesting and useful. Been skimming it this morning and already using the critical reading checklist for my UVC work. Just a comment that I am not finding it that intuitive to navigate at present—maybe that will come with familiarity? Is there any intention of creating a PDF from it with interactive links? That would help—but not sure how that would fit in with ‘retaining ownership’ of it.

    • Hi Vicky, I will look into whether we can provide a downloadable PDF of the course, its a possibility. And I will add more instruction on navigation, I agree it could be clearer!

  • Scrap previous question – just found the link on the front page of the student site – I had been looking on the main OCA site.

  • I have just enrolled with OCA and am finding the induction course really useful. I can, however, only see Sections 1 – 4 (b) so I assume I am missing at least from Note-Taking onwards. I am using the Safari browser on a Mac if that is anything to do with it? However, I also had the same problem on an Android device, am I missing something obvious?

    • Hi Claire, unfortunately our web master isn’t here today, but I have passed your query to him. I do not have the same problem, so I hope he can help.

  • Hi everyone. Thanks for the feedback on this; we’re now looking into how to make the course more easily navigable; until then, you will find ‘next’ and ‘previous’ buttons on each page which will allow you to move to the next section without having to use the navigation block.
    Many thanks,
    Paul
