OCA announces a pre-degree course in drawing

This is a post from the weareoca.com archive. Information contained within it may now be out of date.

Do you enjoy drawing, but not sure if you are ready for HE level study of art or design? OCA is proud of its open access policy, but sometimes students join up to do a degree without the basics in drawing, which is so critical for a study of the visual arts. For this reason, OCA have developed a new pre-degree course in drawing, which is available for enrolment now via the OCA website here. This course acts as a foundation to launch you into studying art at undergraduate level and is strongly recommended for those who have been out of formal study of art for a long time. You will find that this course covers the ground you will need to study illustration too, and will help with a range of other visual arts study. If you don’t have an A level in art, and have not done a substantial amount of post school informal art study, then this course is likely to be right for you. Pass the message on, this is a great course for those itching to get started with art for the first time, or, again.

  • Hello Jane,
I will pass this on. I frequently plug the OCA!
Whose is the beautiful drawing? It doesn’t have a label.

  • I think this is a good development, and this course will be beneficial for new students.
However, it is much harder for existing student to take a pre-degree course on drawing while trying to work on their current studies. There is a 4 year limit per level. It will be next to impossible to finish level 4 (1) with an additional course.

  • This course will be really helpful as a confidence builder for those of us students, perhaps new or returners into design but perhaps needs to reflect a textile dimension. More difficult for existing students to take a step out of the degree course, build skills, and then re-start? Would have suited me fine last year!

  • I am sure it will be of a very high standard, but it seems expensive for a course which gives the student no credits at all to take into further study.

    • Hi Sue, thanks for your comment. The course is significantly less expensive than the equivalent level one OCA courses, but in terms of substance and the amount of tutor feedback you can expect, it is equal in size – ie about 400 learning hours. In addition, OCA is offering a formal assessment process, which though does not have credits attached, does provide summative feedback and an OCA certificate.

  • Hi Jane
This does sound very interesting… I wonder would you recommend this course also for practising artist that are good at paining but would like to gain some more insight into drawing. I’m particularly interested in learning new techniques etc.
Oh And another thing: Once one has completed the course, one gets a certificate.
What exactly says on the certificate? Please elaborate.
