Here is an interesting visit

This is a post from the weareoca.com archive. Information contained within it may now be out of date.

Hopefully all of our study visits are interesting, but this visit looks particularly worth the train fare. On Saturday 9 February, tutors Peter Haveland and Keith Roberts will be hosting a visit to the Open Eye gallery in Liverpool. There are two exhibitions taking place.
The first, Lecture Upon the Shadow has already featured on WeAreOCA as student Dewald Botha reported on it when it was in Shanghai last year. Dewald had mixed feelings about the exhibition, so it will be interesting to see what reactions it provokes among students in Liverpool. Peter, never one to be backward coming forward, will lead the discussion.
The second exhibition features landscapes from EC Hardman archive and Keith who is researching Hardman and volunteering at the archive as part of his PhD in photography will set the context and lead the discussion.
Places are free to OCA students, to book your place please email enquiries@oca-uk.com

  • “Peter, never one to be backward coming forward, will lead the discussion.”
Looking forward to this … as long as we can all hear and we are not stuck in the middle of a noisy cafe.

      • The Starbucks is only a minute away from Open Eye – however, I could ask my hotel (Holiday Inn Express) which would be more like 10 minutes walk away if they would have a reasonably quiet corner where a discussion could be held. In fact, I shall call them to inquire … how many on this study visit? About 16?
Would be good to know where the second venue is … perhaps walking their might pass near Holiday Inn Express (a skimmed down Holiday Inn!)

        • According to Holiday Inn Express, the distance between the gallery and the hotel is less than a kilometre and can be covered in 3 minutes – mmnn I would allow 5 minutes but it is not far.
Have emailed them to request a quiet corner.

        • Agreed … The Holiday Inn Express which claims to be 3 mins away is in fact a good 10 minute walk – it does have appropriate space though.
Starbucks has awful acoustics but is only a minute away. I did talk to staff this evening and explained the situation. They were responsive but don’t usually do table/corner bookings!
They said they would try and clear their long table but that does not work since everyone is strung out. If we were to make a circle of sorts then perhaps we’d be able to have a general discussion!?
Travelodge is 3 minutes away but a similar kind of acoustic assault as Starbucks.

  • If anyone else is going to be in Liverpool on Friday night, I am staying at The Albert Dock (Holiday Inn) and will probably visit the Cavern Club …

    • I found reading your thoughts very interesting Amano. You raise many pertinent issues that I would urge all students to ponder on. Often, I think, asking the question can be more important than answering it, whether one is a student or a practicing artist.

  • Amano, Anne, I managed to read your entries on this exhibition, very interesting (and Amano, you’re too kind 😉 !
Anne, it seems some images are different… in SH there were 7 images in the Two of Us exhibit, and 14 in Memory of Water. The order of these are also little different I see.
And yes Amano, that image of Jobs by Jacques was for sure not up here! lol!
    Wish I were there …

    • I have been thinking how hard it must be to be a distant distance learner and not be able to join in discussions on study days like that or benefit from regional groups which is the other recent OCA initiative. maybe we need a global “regional” group ?

      • Susanne and I get together every now and then, which helps a lot! And I know of one tutor who sometimes come this way (but we’ve managed to miss each other every time so far), and I’ve invited him to join us for a gallery visit to make a real study visit of it, but we’ll have to see if / when that works out. If that happens, I’ll get in touch with OCA HQ to contact other students in Asia to hear if they can join too… it would be nice, but I’m not really holding my breath 🙂
