I was born in Swansea but moved to the Brecon Beacons where I spent most of my childhood. I studied English Literature at Aberystwyth. I then trained as a Drama and English teacher and wrote my first novel during my first few years in teaching.
I got my first publishing deal aged 26 and went on to write three more novels for Bloomsbury. Following the publication of my fourth novel I took a break to have three children and during this time taught Creative Writing and Children’s Literature for the Open University.
My fifth novel, The Boy who drew the Future was nominated for the Carnegie Medal. My sixth novel, Hope publishes September 2017. My seventh novel, Matchgirl publishes Autumn 2018. I am currently writing my 8th novel. I am a National Trust writer in residence, a Patron of Reading and a WoMentor.
