Mary Charman-Smith

Having worked as a tutor for the OCA since 2007 on Creative Writing courses I joined the Creative Arts department a few years later. I thoroughly enjoy working with learners on these courses. It is really interesting work as each student has their own creative interests and style which it is the tutor’s job to help develop.

My qualifications are BA English, MA Creative Writing and PGCE in post sixteen education. I also have the diploma to teach English Language to non native speakers. My main interest is poetry and I have had poems published both individually and collectively. I am happy to tutor up to level 3 on this genre. I also tutor on prose courses at level one. In particular I love nature poems about the coast and countryside.

Creative Arts has long interested me and I took some modules of this on my first degree. I am very interested in attending events from a range of arts disciplines and continually work to broaden my knowledge. Photography interests me as a hobby (I belong to a local photography group). I try to paint but my main interest in painting and also with textiles is to visit art galleries and exhibitions both in person and virtually. During the pandemic I certainly increased my knowledge when I had time to find many online events to involve with and enjoy. I am interested in music and enjoy playing the guitar.
