Russell Murray

I have combined a role in higher education teaching digital media practice and screenwriting, with a professional career in the film and television industry as a cinematographer, screenwriter and director, for over twenty-five years.

In addition to my full time position at one of the UK’s leading universities, I have worked as a tutor for OCA for some ten years, it’s a position that reflects my interest and enthusiasm for long distance and life-long learning, offering opportunities for creative development to those who cannot attend full time higher education.

My professional work covers a range of creative media, in photography, film making, screenwriting and latterly a return to experimental practice, and I have exhibited both in the UK, with recent installations and screenings at the Manchester Museum of Science and Technology, and overseas in China, Brazil, Portugal.

Photography is for me very much a personal and intimate medium; it is related to and informs my work as a moving image-maker and storyteller. It provides a foundation for much of my research and practice in education where I have developed creative programmes based on ‘the informed practitioner’; for those who may not wish to become professional photographers, but want to develop their personal vision, enhance their ability to communicate through images, and engage at a high creative and technical level.

I am currently developing projects collaborative with Chinese Universities and industry to expand my creative and teaching practice.

My philosophy is to inform and inspire, and offer an experienced creative vision, under-pinned by technical ability, professional confidence and critical reflection.
