Lizzy Levy

My practice draws from my former career in the fashion industry, ten years based in London as a designer.  I graduated from the Royal College of Art, M.A. Fashion Design in 1993.  More recently I graduated as a mature student from Hallam University in Sheffield, M.A. Contemporary Fine Art.  I am a qualified lecturer having taught across BTEC, HND and Degree level courses via Chesterfield College/Derby University and Sheffield College.  Via teaching I enjoy drawing out new ideas and concepts and supporting students on their own personal creative journeys.

As an artist I focus on utilising the discarded.  Pieces are constructed using foraged fabrics and unloved materials.  I am interested in the histories that lie beneath the ‘thrown away”.  Therefore, recycling, global impact, environment, globalization, consumerism and human rights are areas of research that impact upon my practice.   I am interested in unearthing hidden histories that lie beneath cloth.

I construct art pieces using many textile methods including: weave, embroidery, applique, dyeing, stitch, collage, printmaking plus felting techniques.  I construct installations, sculpture, videos, prints and large scale wall mounted works.

I have exhibited at the A.G.C Gallery and S1 in Sheffield; The Classroom Gallery Nottingham; The Tetley in Leeds and more recently in F.B.I Gallery Space Worksop.  New works will be shown in New York later this year via Sluice and the F.B.I Gallery Space.  I travelled extensively via my former career in fashion exhibiting and attending trade exhibitions such as Moda, G.D.S and Premiere Vision liaising with buyers and manufacturers in New York, Paris, Dusseldorf and Hong Kong.
