My first degree was in photography at Salisbury College during the early 1990’s, which is also when I began working as a professional freelance photographer. At that time my practice was concerned with editorial work for publications such as ID Magazine and FACE Magazine. The work was mostly portraiture based and focused upon fashion and youth culture.

I have been the Programme Leader for the B.A. (hons) in Photography at St Helens College for 13 years and within this role tend to work mostly with Level 6 students, on Final Show and Dissertation modules.

I’m in the process of submitting for a practice based PhD at Manchester Metropolitan University which should be completed in 2017. This doctorate is entitled ‘Photographic Archival Intervention within the Edward Chambre Hardman Portraiture Collection (1923-1963)’. The research is concerned with a large collection of commercial photographic portraits, shot by Hardman in Liverpool over a 40 year timeframe and comprises of over 100,000 large format monochrome negatives. Through the creation of a bespoke database it has been possible to reveal patterns within this collection, which are then extracted from the archive. The creative output deals specifically with presenting these portraits back to the communities from where they originated. A selection of the research was recently shown at Liverpool Central Library, the exhibition for which was entitled ‘Intermissions’ and at the opening night of the Liverpool Biennial in July 2016.
