I am not an artist that makes work about what I know…I am an artist that makes work about what I don’t know. I have an interdisciplinary practice that uses sound, film, photography, drawing, bookmaking and a wide variety of technology. My current work is an audiovisual exploration into ‘how time distorts sound and how sound distorts time’. I use time distorted loops and damaged television screens that combine electronic noise music with the textural sounds of broken or discarded acoustic instruments. All the equipment I use is considered obsolete or broken. I use this as both a sustainable working practice, (not buying new but repairing and reusing), and for its unpredictability and chaotic results. My research also explores sounds position within the visual arts and as a research tool, how it is sometimes under-valued and often misunderstood.
I have recently exhibited my work at the ICA in London (2023), closed the Leeds 2023 Artist show with a live performance and am exhibited at Gallery 46, Whitechapel, London July 2024. I recently received a year long research residency with The Sustainable Darkroom to develop plant and waste based photographic chemicals. I worked with chemists and botanists to successfully find recipes and solutions to create waste-based developers. This research was published in a digital book 2022. I continue to give lectures, run workshops and write about my work, exploring sustainability not just as a forward-looking art practice but as an investigation into humanity and failure.
I work on a wide variety of projects in an organisational, technical or creative capacity. I edit and produce films, write computer programmes for interactive artworks and install projection works. This has given me the opportunity to work for organisations such as Maison Margiela on their Paris Fashion week show, and on mainstream large budget films. I have installed work at a range of galleries and locations such as Yorkshire Sculpture Park, Leeds Art Gallery, the ICA London and run large scale public arts festivals.
I have a BA in Interactive Arts from Manchester School of Art, a Masters in Fine Art from Leeds Arts University and am currently working towards my PhD at Leeds School of Art. I have taught at most levels of Arts Education, I was Head of Art at a large FE institution and currently teach on a range of courses at BA and MA level.
