Christian Lloyd

I am an artist, designer, and educator based in West Yorkshire, originally from Wales. Since 2009, I have worked at OCA as a tutor, course author, former programme leader for BA (Hons) Visual Communication (2009–2018), and most recently as Director of Learning and Teaching, supporting fellow tutors and helping to shape how our courses are delivered. I am a keen advocate of OCA’s inclusive and accessible approach to art education and enjoy working with a diverse range of students.
I have lectured at Leeds Beckett University on BA(Hons) Graphic Arts and Design degree (2014–), across a suite of contemporary art and illustration degrees at the University of Huddersfield (2012–2015), and was Programme Leader for BA (Hons) Visual Communication at Leeds Arts University (1999–2012). I have a degree in Illustration, an MA in Contemporary Fine Art, and a PGCE in Online and Distance Education from the Open University. I hold a number of external examiner posts and am a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
Commercially, I have has worked for twenty years as a freelance graphic designer on print and web projects within education, arts and charity sectors. Creatively, I have a diverse visual, live and community art practice that includes a number of ongoing projects. Bristow & Lloyd is a collaborative visual arts project that playfully examines how we tell stories about our everyday lives. Often working with community or school groups, we use creative writing and typography to produce public art pieces, publications and audio recordings. Other projects include a ‘Dadaist Rockabilly’ band, exploring frictions between comedy and physical threat, and a solo improvised act playing with comedic craft skills and escapology. Common across these projects is an interest in creating playful and provocative situations that invite participation and prompt conversations.
