Barry Hurd

I gained my core knowledge of the creative sector whilst studying at Bath Spa University and the Royal College of Art. After completing a graphic design and art direction MA in 1992, I worked for a number of publishing and advertising agencies that included News International and McCann Erickson. I belong to the professional body International Society of Typographic Design where I contribute regularly to the professional and student competition schemes where I have received tutor awards from the ISTD and D&AD including the prestigious Black Pencil. My time spent at the RCA underpinned my approach to teaching with emphasis on thinking laterally, developing high quality research with intellectual rigor and well-considered investigation.

Over the last 25 years I have taught at various Universities in England and Europe that include: University Centre Colchester, Cambridge School of Art, Universidad Comlutence de Madrid, Universita IUAV di Venezia and Bauhaus-Unversitat Weimar. Common to all these institutions, successful students have an un-quenching desire to grow their knowledge of graphic design, seeking ways to define the craft before seeking ways to improve upon it.

Outside of education, I have more than 28 years’ experience in professional practice, working in graphic design, advertising and publishing. Areas of research include typographic interpretation of poetry, landscapes and geography through analogue and digital print-based processes.

I am currently external examiner for FdA Creative Digital Design at University Centre South Devon.
