I am an experienced tutor, having taught at all levels of Higher Education across a number of art and design subjects for over 18 years, and I specialise in teaching interdisciplinary creative practice and theory, having developed and delivered modules for students studying contemporary fine art, history of art, museum studies, graphic design, animation, product design, interior design, fashion and textiles, photography, illustration, digital media processes and more.
As well as working as a Creative Arts Tutor at OCA, I have been a Researcher and Senior Lecturer in Art and Design at the University of Huddersfield since 2012. Before that, I worked in the School of Fine Art, History of Art and Cultural Studies at the University of Leeds.
I was awarded my PhD in History of Art and Museum Studies in January 2012 from the University of Leeds, for which I was the Stanley and Audrey Burton Scholarship holder. I completed an MA in Art Gallery and Museum Studies (2005) and a BA (joint hons.) in English and History of Art (2004) from the University of Leeds. I am a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and in 2015 completed a Post-Graduate Certificate in Research Supervision.
I have also worked in a number of art galleries and museums during my career, supporting curatorial work, developing exhibitions programmes, and designing interpretation resources and other exhibition materials.
My research explores the often complex relationships between creative practices and their audiences, including the role of creative practices in how we understand heritage. It considers the ways in which current art and design practices explore concepts and methods of exhibiting, with a particular focus on the use of subversive, contradictory or reflexive exhibition techniques. I am also interested in people’s relationships to space and place, particularly in an inter-generational context, where creative practice becomes a tool for understanding these relationships.
