Adam Knight | The Open College of the Arts

Adam Knight

I am an artist and currently work as a Tutor (Research) at the Royal College of Art in London. My work begins with a series of field visits and recordings to establish potential working practices and how a site might be hybridly represented in fiction and documentary. In architecture a desire-line is a direct and improvised route taken between buildings that typically defy a pre-designated track. I work with desire-lines as a method of tethering objects of research together: sonic, textual and visual. I consider desire-lines as another way of ‘armaturing’: to allow for difference between minor and major moments of a project. Work can be realised through writing, sound, photography, video, animation, painting, drawing and installation.

I have worked as an academic in Higher Education for the last fifteen years, teaching across art and design courses. Since 2010 I have been a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy after completing my PGCert in Learning and Teaching in the Creative arts. I completed my MA in 2007 and finished my practice-led research degree in 2019; both at the Royal College of Art. I have taught on BA and MA courses at Central Saint Martins, London College of Communication, Bath Spa, Leeds Beckett and University for the Creative Arts; where I was Senior Lecturer for 8 years. I have also been visiting tutor in HE partnerships with Maharashtra Institute of Technology in Pune and the Hong Kong Design Institute.

I exhibit internationally in museums and galleries such as: Kunsthalle Rostock; Halle 14, Leipzig; ACC Galerie, Weimar and City Museum, Lisbon. My films have been screened at institutions such as: Herbert Art Gallery, Kettle’s Yard, Outpost Gallery, Wysing Arts Centre, Grand Union and Shortwave Cinema, London. I have participated in residencies and projects throughout Europe and America, including: La Ira de Dios, Buenos Aires; The Showroom, London; A-Z West, California; Jan Van Eyck Academy; Eastside International, Los Angeles; Atelierhaus Salzamt, Linz; The League Residency in New York; Kunsthaus Aussersihil, Zürich; ArtSchool/UK, Whitechapel Gallery and Cell Project Space. I have presented my research at several conferences including Think Nonument! Together, Symposium, Kino Šiška Centre for Urban Culture, Ljubljana and From horror vacui to spaces of re-enchantment: art, ecology, and urban wastelands, University of the Arts, Berlin.

I have been funded and had successful grant applications through a-n Artist Bursary, Arts Council England, Royal College of Art, University for the Creative Arts, City of Linz, European Regional Development Fund, Creative Scotland and British Council.
